Why are the dwarves not in Lord of the Rings?

They were defending Dale, Erebor, and the Iron Hills from attacks made by Sauron’s forces in the North, and possibly from Easterlings. The Appendices in RotK outline some of the battles. They don’t cover it in the movies because it would be information overload.
