Should I play Gears of War Judgement first?

Judgement was okay for campaign. The points scoring in campaign was quite decent and something different. The multiplayer killed everything we knew about Gears though. But I’d say definitely play it before Gears 4 if you do plan on playing it.

Do I need to play the other gears before 5?

I recommend playing 1-4 before 5 if you’re not in a hurry to play 5. And you can definitely skip Judgment and ignore its existence. I mean if you want another fun gears game or personally like Baird, you should play it. If you still feel like playing more gears then go for the original trilogy.
