Nonlethal damage, also called subdual damage or striking to subdue, refers to a rule in Dungeons & Dragons which allows an attacker to knock an opponent out rather than kill them.
Can spells do non-lethal?
Only spells/abilities that include a melee attack can knock a creature out. First, a note: there is no such thing as “non-lethal damage” in 5e. Instead there is a rule called “knocking a creature out” which is the only way to do damage without killing a creature that the rules provide.

You can deal “non-lethal” damage even via Smite. The only condition for non-lethal is (1) reduce a creature to 0 hp, (2) the attack that reduced it was via melee attack. You can though, provided the spell or spell like effect is a melee attack.
