Why is the nether 8 times smaller?

Distances are 8 times shorter in the nether because it’s deep underground. A Minecraft word is probably a cube. If the nether is underground, than based on geometry it should be smaller. If you go to the nether, walk 10 blocks, then come back to the overworld, it makes sense that you would travel 80 blocks.
