Why did Laguna leave Raine?

Laguna and Raine appear to have adopted Ellone (it’s not really clear who her parents are or how she came to be in their care) and when Esthar kidnapped her, Laguna left to find her. Raine died in childbirth, and being left without any parent or legal guardian, Squall and Ellone end up in the orphanage.
