Did humans invent math or did we discover it?
The only reason mathematics is admirably suited describing the physical world is that we invented it to do just that. It is a product of the human mind and we make mathematics up as we go along to suit our purposes. Mathematics is not discovered, it is invented. This is the non-Platonist position.
Is math man made?
Their truth values are based on rules that humans created. Mathematics is thus an invented logic exercise, with no existence outside mankind’s conscious thought, a language of abstract relationships based on patterns discerned by brains, built to use those patterns to invent useful but artificial order from chaos.
Are numbers real?
So (and this is the answer), if things in math are “real” because they describe simple properties of things we can see, then natural numbers are no more or less real than polynomials. About as hard as counting turtles without the (obviously “real”) natural numbers.
Are numbers infinite?
The sequence of natural numbers never ends, and is infinite. There’s no reason why the 3s should ever stop: they repeat infinitely. So, when we see a number like “0.999…” (i.e. a decimal number with an infinite series of 9s), there is no end to the number of 9s.
Are numbers real or abstract?
Yes, numbers are one of the prototypical examples of an abstraction. Two sets that can be put into one-to-one correspondence were recognized by some clever person in prehistory to have a trait in common, and natural numbers are the abstraction of that trait for finite sets.
Are numbers real or imaginary?
While it is not a real number — that is, it cannot be quantified on the number line — imaginary numbers are “real” in the sense that they exist and are used in math. Imaginary numbers, also called complex numbers, are used in real-life applications, such as electricity, as well as quadratic equations.
What is 5i equal to?
The imaginary number i is equal to the square root of -1. In other words, i2 equals -1. The square root of a negative number is not a real number and it is not a variable. For example, the square root of -25 is written as 5i because 5i times 5i equals 25 times -1 or -25.
What is 2i equal to?
The absolute value of the complex number, 2i, is 2.
