When should you reveal a companion?
It’s written as “Companion—[Condition].” Before the game begins, you may reveal one card you own from outside the game with a companion ability whose condition is fulfilled by your starting deck. (See rule 103.1b.) If you do, once during that game, you may play that card from outside the game.

If you choose a creature to be your companion, they start the game in your sideboard instead of your main deck. At any point in the game, you may pay three mana of any color to move your companion from your sideboard into your hand. Then, you can cast them from your hand like you would cast any other card.
