I’d say the main reason you should play MGS1 first is because it gives you this attachment to Solid Snake that enhances the role he plays in MGS2. I started playing from MGS1 a few months ago. I’d highly recommend starting from there. The story plays a huge roll in the games and you get a lot of the story in MGS1.
