How did the Covenant find out about Earth?
They were hunting for Forerunner artifacts, specifically the Ark. After they found Halo, they learned a lot of Forerunner locations and during Halo 2, they learned that the Ark or the portal TO the Ark was there. Thats why they came back to Earth in Halo 3.
