Kotor 1 has a great fighting system with an excellent story. The game play is fun and original, but lacking much customization. Kotor 2 has an overall “darker” feel to it than 1. The story isn’t as interesting as the first, but the level of customization is awesome.

Should I play Kotor 2 before reading Revan?

I would HIGHLY advise against reading the book first. The KOTOR games are fantastic and should be played without any other outside influence (save for the Kotor 2 restored content mod). Go and play the games and then come back.
