The essential function of a DI box is to convert a high-Z or high impedance signal to a low-Z or low impedance mic signal, but why would we want to do this? The DI Box also allows you to split your signal, sending ‘Wet’ and ‘Dry’ signals to different places, which is why it’s such a useful bit of studio and stage gear.

Why are DI boxes so expensive?
it’s expensive because it has a jensen transformer in it. jensen is one of the best. a cheap DI will have a small cheap transformer in iot and will sound weak and saturate easily. that being said, the whirlwind and Proco DI’s are perfectly good for the price.
