To unlock a squad story, you must spend a total of 40 CP between all the characters who are part of that event. You do not have to use all of the characters to unlock a story. You just need to use 40 CP on any one of the units involved.

What happens if a character dies in Valkyria Chronicles?

All dead units will return with every New Game+ you start but for all other purposes they’re considered dead permanently. -Your ‘leaders’ such as Alicia/Rosie/Largo will retreat if they fall under the normal death requirements (touched by an enemy / wait 3 turns) after being knocked out but they won’t die permanently.
