Why was Project Riese abandoned in World War 2?
Some prisoners were left behind, mostly badly ill, until the Red Army arrived in the area in May 1945. Project Riese was abandoned at the initial stage of construction and only 9 km (25,000 m 2, 100,000 m 3) of tunnels were dug out. German code names of individual structures of the project are unknown because of the lack of documentation.
