Are firearms martial weapons?

Firearms are Martial Ranged Weapons. The table on DMG, Page 267, shows that the firearms are Martial Ranged Weapons. To use them with proficiency bonus requires being proficient with martial weapons. If you apply the normal rules for weapons in the PHB, you can use them but not apply the proficiency bonus.

Can you use Dex for a longbow?

Thrown ranged weapons use Dexterity. While you do need to be strong to draw a bow, being stronger will not effect the maximum power of a longbow past a certain point. All ranged weapons use the Dexterity modifier, and all melee weapons use the Strength modifier.

Do crossbows use Dex or Str?

Section on Dexterity (PHB 176) does not have any exception for the crossbow. You add your Dexterity modifier to your attack roll and your damage roll when attacking with a ranged weapon, such as a sling or longbow.

Are longbows Dex weapons?

Unfortunately yes, even though bows are very much strength-based weapons in real life. Doesn’t matter how far you can shoot a bow if you can’t aim it. That’s the reason for it being dex based. Though it does take a lot of muscle to use one.

Do any ranged weapons use strength?

Page 194 in the PHB, under Modifiers to the roll, it says that strength is always used for melee weapon attacks and dexterity is always used for ranged weapon attacks. There are a few exceptions such as finesse weapons and thrown weapons, but there’s no exception that applies to heavy X-bow.

Slings often usually had the same properties as the “composite longbow,” namely, adding strength to damage and using dexterity to hit, allowing characters with both dex and strength to score pretty good damage.
