What does the identify spell do?

You can use the identify spell to identify any spell effects an item or creature is currently being affected by or the spell used to create an item (see the spell description from the SRD or PHB). If you instead touch a creature throughout the casting, you learn what spells, if any, are currently affecting it.

Does identify take a spell slot?

This makes the utility of the Identify spell a little less obvious. However, Identify works in eleven minutes (or one minute, at the cost of a spell slot) instead of an hour for a short rest. You can also use Identify to learn which spells are currently affecting a creature or object, if any.

Is identify a ritual?

You choose one object that you must touch throughout the casting of the spell. If it is a magic item or some other magic-imbued object, you learn its properties and how to use them, whether it requires attunement to use, and how many charges it has, if any.

Is Identify spell useful?

Identify is rarely useful unless your DM uses the item identification variants from the DMG.

Can you use identify on a creature?

Can sorcerers learn identify?

No. Read magic could be used to identify what the spells are, but not to cast them. Sorcerers learn spells from their class, not from scrolls or a spellbook.

Can sorcerers use Spellbooks?

A sorcerer has a fixed number of spells at each level (can’t have more) and when he/she gains a new level he/she can switch the spells as he/she pleases (always from the sorcerer spell list). A spellbook would unfortunately be useless to a sorcerer.

How do sorcerers get their powers?

Many sorcerers are descended from dragons, at least distantly, and draconic blood, with its arcane infusions, makes a potent source of power for many sorcerers, many of whom learn to tap this power in order to make themselves stronger, more resilient, or elementally gifted.
