Before you can raise animals in a pasture, you have to select an animal type to place in the area. if the town doesn’t have any livestock, they can be acquired by buying them at a trading post. Once there are a few animals in the pasture, they will reproduce and fill the pasture over time.

You’ll see the best efficiency of the pens in the table bellow. Note that the optimal size of the pens for cattles and sheep are the biggest possible pens with 2 herdsman.

Cows are generally around 2,000, maybe 2,500, and sheep around 1,000 the first time the trader comes through. Once you buy some of that animal the next time they come through they animals will be cheaper.
